Support our Safety (SOS) Coalition

On April 27, 2006, the Burleigh Street Community Development Corporation convened the inaugural meeting of the Support our Safety Coalition, a neighborhood initiative dedicated to working toward individual and collective security and safety in the Sherman Park area. The meeting was held at  St. Joseph's Regional Health Center and included remarks by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and representatives of the Milwaukee Police Department. Those attending were asked to submit specific areas of concern and suggestions for changes and improvements. Based on those comments, as well as on follow-up conversations with residents, the coalition has decided to focus on the following safety ideas:

  1. Neighborhood driving patrol

  2. Block clubs

  3. Lights in the alley and/or on front porches

  4. Sherman Park Community Association membership campaign

  5. Cameras in the alleys and/or on street corners

A stakeholder work group has been formed to establish committees for each of these areas and to monitor progress. The next meeting  of that group has been set for Monday July 10, 2006, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Burleigh Street Community Enterprise Center, second floor community hall, 5312 Burleigh Street. Everyone is invited to attend.
